A Pet

Description

the humble city of salt lake, a once mighty city that that sat proud and tall upon the bank of a breath taking lake. back then, the city was a gem shimmering for miles around, shining like a beacon for all to see.

sadly, the lake turned salty and started to retreat back leaving barren salt flats. the city started to decay as well; companies lost their power and died or limped away under the bandage of bankruptcy and bail out. most the mighty towers of steel were ripped from the sky and consumed for their parts leaving only a few rusting and weathered buildings to the eye's perusal. the once nice little shops fell into disrepair surrounded by the abandoned and rotting skeleton of industry; old warehouses, run down flour and sugar mills formed walls around little surviving neighborhoods and tiny stores that simply refused to die.

one such store was a little pet shop, "Tommy's pet n' more" the the flickering neon sign boasted, the once cheery baby blue exterior was censored by a blank coat of white to try and cover up the rust and wood rot that plagued the structure. out front was the stained and cracked windows along with an old delivery truck with four flat tires tucked away in the alley with a blanket of litter tucked about the front of the vehicle.

the interior was mostly clean, the carpet was weathered and in some places crudely patched but freshly vacuumed by old Tom, the owner. the old man was cheery by overcast with loss of hope. he first came to the city with hopes of bringing joy through animal friends for the young and the old alike. he did well, for the most part. when the city started to die his store was hardly hit but the mass move tool a toll on most stores. his survived due to his selling of both pets and foodstuffs. he sits by the cash register in his rocking chair holding to his aged silver harmonica playing an upbeat tune to the few listeners within the sudo-abode.

one such listener was a scrawny little pony adorned with the best ole' Tom can offer. he had invested everything into making this little pony's stay as comfortable as he could. Myra was her name, and she was a little memoir from the good old days of prosperity and business in SLC. she sat by the cash register tethered and muzzled. due to city law, all mid-sized pet animals had to be tethered and muzzled during business hours. but Myra didn't seem to car all too much, just so long as she could still hear and see. most ponies, don't like people and require training to become people friendly. not Myra, right off the bat she was very gentle and friendly and longed for the day when someone would take her home and be a part of a family of her very own...someday.

Myra used to have friends, six of them at one point. back, during the happy times, but one by one the little ponies were bought until the city fell though leaving Myra friendless. well, besides ole' Tom. it was food that kept people coming, all the beat down and hopeless faces that shuffle into the store and breath a sigh, ashamed at the loss of their city. they get their supplies and reach the register. as they fish out their coins Myra sits by the desk and smiles brightly upward, eyes shining. most customers chuckle, and for a minute, are thankful for this little speck of life in this dying town. they'll bend down and ruffle her silky mane. Ole' Tom chuckles a warm and year seasoned chuckle and pats the strangers on the back, wishing them safe travels. the people nod and bid thanks and then they leave.

Myra's heart sinks as the person leaves just like all the other before. her head and ears droop as she sinks next to ole' Tom's chair and buries her face in her hooves and cries softly.

ole' Tom puts down his harmonica and sighs as he bends down the stoke Myra's head and neck tenderly to comfort the sad filly. it's been like this for months, Myra was close to giving up, but ole' Tom has been there, hushing her cries and drying her tears. soon she's sitting by the counter looking out the window eagerly waiting for more people.
